Pannonia Bio Zrt. – Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide

The Danube Removals project, involving the geological storage of carbon dioxide from the group’s plant in Dunaföldvár, will receive EUR 48 million in funding from the EU Innovation Fund.

The aim is to capture and store 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The carbon dioxide is generated at Pannonia Bio Zrt.’s plant in Dunaföldvár during fermentation and decomposition processes. The system is scheduled to begin operations in September 2027 and run until 2037.

A compression station for carbon dioxide and a 10–15 km pipeline will be built directly next to Pannonia Bio Zrt.’s plant. Two monitoring wells will also be drilled. In the long term, the model could enable the storage of several tens of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide. In addition to Clon Bio, the owner of the Pannonia Group, the British company EMOV Ltd. and OGD Green Storage Kft. are also involved in the development.

Last year, the company, founded in 2009, processed almost 1.3 million tonnes of corn. This yielded around 550 million liters of bioethanol as well as high-quality protein products for the food and animal feed industries. The group employs 400 people and generated net revenue of EUR 718 million in 2025. Of this, EUR 44 million came from the domestic market and EUR 674 million from exports.
