Employment figures are declining due to Hungary’s challenging demographic situation, although unemployment is not increasing. In April, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) estimated the number of full-time employees at approximately 4.62 million, the same level recorded during the February–April period.
Compared to the beginning of 2025, more than 70,000 jobs disappeared from the primary labor market. While the employment rate fell noticeably below 75%, and among women dropped to just above 70%, the unemployment rate remained at around 4.5%, similar to the previous year.
The main reason is demographic. More people are leaving the workforce for retirement than new entrants or previously inactive individuals are joining the labor market.
