E.ON Hungária has handed over a new substation in Szombathely (Vas County). The German company invested HUF 7.5 billion (EUR 20 million) to meet the rapidly growing energy demand of the western Hungarian city over the long term. In addition, the number of private solar installations has quadrupled over the past five years.
At the substation, electricity arriving via 132 kV high-voltage lines is converted to medium voltage (22 or 11 kV). The two transformers installed for this purpose have a combined capacity of 80 MVA.
This was the last of twelve investments in total to modernize substations under the Hungarian-Slovak “Danube InGrid” smart grid program. The EU contributed one third of the investment funds for Transdanubia, which E.ON puts at a total of HUF 46 billion (EUR 125.8 million).
