JANAF–MOL – Crude oil contract with “take-or-pay” clause

August 17, 2026

Croatian oil pipeline operator JANAF and the MOL Group have signed an agreement for the transportation of 2.05 million tonnes of crude oil this year.

By December 31, JANAF will transport a total of 2.05 million tonnes of crude oil. The agreement was concluded under a “take-or-pay” arrangement, meaning that the buyer pays for the ordered transportation capacity even if it does not use it or uses only part of it. The contract also sets out all the terms of the cooperation that began on January 1.

There have been increasing tensions between the two companies. During the negotiations, MOL repeatedly criticized JANAF’s transportation costs and technical capacity. The Croatian company rejected the criticism, emphasizing that it sets its fees transparently based on the transportation distance and the contractually agreed volume.

The Zagreb-based JANAF operates the Croatian section of the Adriatic oil pipeline, which represents one of the alternative oil transportation routes in Central Europe. The company is a member of MOIG, an association of oil companies from the Mediterranean region.
