Oil and gas company MOL is now entering the biomethane production business. A new production unit, representing an investment of HUF 2.7 billion (EUR 7.5 million), has been handed over at the MOL Group’s biogas plant in Szarvas.
The unit is expected to produce more than 7 million cubic meters of biomethane per year, enough to supply approximately 8,500 households. At the biogas plant, which has been in operation since 2011, the former end product is now purified of carbon dioxide using a special process, making it suitable for direct injection into the gas grid. Szarvas marks new territory for MOL, though nationwide it is already the third biomethane production facility. The Szarvas biogas plant, which processes 110,000 tonnes of food industry and agricultural waste into 12 million cubic meters of biogas annually, has been part of the MOL Group since 2023.
For the use of biomethane as CNG or LNG in transport, however, MOL is looking for partners to advance research and development.
The company is also planning further biogas plants in Slovakia, Croatia and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
